SuperValu reveals how Irish romantics favour food to impress on Valentine’s Day... even if they can’t cook!

  • 1 in 5 Irish people have admitted to passing a ready meal off as their own creation
  • 38% of those will go as far as arranging it on a fancy plate to hide the evidence
  • Generational gap in culinary skills revealed, with 78% of those aged 55 and over proudly admitting to never suffering from a ‘kitchen fail’ on Valentine’s Day while 13% of 25-34 year olds have committed the kitchen cardinal sin and undercooked the chicken!
  • Up from 50% last year, 61% favour staying in for a home-cooked meal over venturing out for dinner

Research from SuperValu has revealed what’s going on in the kitchen ahead of the most romantic day of the year. Whether you’re a budding Kevin Dundon, or just a walking kitchen nightmare, 61% of Irish people are staying in this Valentine’s Day for a home-cooked meal.

But who is cooking from scratch and who is set to Fake it Til they Make it? 1 in 5 have admitted to passing a ready meal off as their own creation with 38% of those going as far as arranging it on a fancy plate to hide the evidence and 37% getting the packaging straight out to the recycling bin. Interestingly, it’s the couples in the capital that are the most likely to tell the white lie, with 28% of the respondents telling little white lies by claiming they cooked the meals themselves from scratch, living in Dublin.

If you plan to Fake It yourself this Valentine’s Day, it’s never been easier, as SuperValu’s team of experts have done all the hard work for you with the perfect SuperValu Signature Tastes meal deal for two.  What about those that choose to go it alone?

Those young millennials have a lot to learn from the older romantics. 78% of those aged 55 and over proudly admit to never falling foul to a ‘kitchen fail’ on Valentine’s Day while sadly, 13% of 25-34 year olds have committed the kitchen cardinal sin and undercooked the chicken!

 Love is alive…

Faking it doesn’t stop with the chef! 49% of us admit that we would lie to our loved one to spare their feelings if they served up something less than tasty and 6% would go as far as feeding it to the dog with 4% getting creative and saying they are allergic to an ingredient. But not everyone is as sensitive to the chef’s feelings,  42% say they would be blunt and tell them straight that it’s awful, with those from Ulster being the most honest bunch (57%).
