Barretstown Dublin Mountains Challenge raises almost €800,000 in aid of children’s charity

Barretstown, the children’s charity that offers free, specially designed camps and programmes for children and their families living with a serious illness is calling on the public to take part in their seventh annual Barretstown Dublin Mountains Challenge on the 24th of May 2020.

Each year this annual fundraising challenge sees almost 600 people enjoy the stunning coastal views along the Dublin Mountain route. Since kicking off in 2014, the challenge has raised almost €800,000 for Barretstown providing vital funds for the charity and helping more children living with serious illnesses to experience the life-changing programmes at Barretstown.

Individuals and teams alike are encouraged to take part in the walk, achieving their own personal goals while also raising much needed funds for Barretstown. Participants can choose one of two routes. The 42km trek stretches from Tallaght Stadium to Shankill, it takes from 9-10 hours to finish. The shorter, 24km trek begins at Tallaght Stadium and finishes at Three Rock, it takes about 4-5 hours to complete.

Speaking about the fundraiser, Dee Ahearn, Chief Executive at Barretstown, said: “The Dublin Mountains Challenge is one of our most popular fundraising events each year. Those who participate always enjoy experiencing the beautiful Dublin Mountain Way, challenging themselves and contributing to the charities fundraising efforts. It is always a memorable and wonderful experience for everyone involved. This is the seventh year that we have hosted the fundraiser and it just keeps getting better with many participants returning year after year. I would like to thank and applaud all those who have taken part over the years, for continuing to support this special event. We look forward to once again welcoming participants from all over the country and abroad to Dublin this May 24th.”

Mark Aherne, General Manager at Lucozade Ribena Suntory Ireland, said: “2020 marks Lucozade’s sixth year as the sponsor of Barretstown’s Dublin Mountains Challenge. We are proud to be part of this wonderful event once again. At Lucozade, we are committed to encouraging our customers and our colleagues to enjoy active lives and our partnership with the Barretstown Dublin Mountains Challenge helps us to deliver this. We want to encourage everyone across Ireland to enjoy the benefits of exercise, while raising money for Barretstown and ultimately, having a great day out!”

The entry fee for the 42km challenge is €75 for an individual or €250 for a team of four; for the 24km walk, €50 per individual or €175 per team of four.
