UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School is Ireland’s leading postgraduate business school with a world-class reputation and ranked consistently in the top 100 in the world. In an increasingly competitive business education market, both domestically and internationally, it needs to attract the best students and faculty. As part of the School’s ongoing marketing communications programme it engages in extensive media relations and has world-class faculty available to comment on a range of business issues, from management to marketing and leadership to corporate governance. 

 

Solution

As part of its ongoing efforts on behalf of UCD Smurfit School to increase media comment opportunities for its faculty, The Reputations Agency developed the concept of establishing an awards scheme to recognise the very best of business journalism in Ireland. In establishing the scheme it required buy-in from the business journalism community and with this in mind, the agency worked closely with the Business Journalists Association of Ireland in creating categories, award criteria and terms and conditions that would ensure the awards would be respected by the constituency they were created to serve. Now in their 12th year this engagement is ongoing to ensure the awards evolve reflective of the ever-changing media landscape.

 

Outcome

The awards have become a calendar event for the business journalism community with growing levels of engagement year-on-year with over 100 entries now received annually. The awards scheme has been publicly acknowledged by the Business Journalists Association of Ireland in how it has taken a leadership role in championing good journalism for the wider society and economy, in particular during a time when the media industry has undergone huge change and remains challenged. By sponsoring the awards relationships between the School and business journalists have continued to strengthen in a spirit of partnership where faculty at the School are used with greater frequency in media in commenting on business issues of the day which in turn showcases the high calibre academic team at UCD Smurfit School.
